The US is the richest country in the world – at least when it comes to gross domestic product. In 2020, the country generated around 20.9 trillion US dollars. The People’s Republic of China comes in second with around 14.7 trillion US dollars. But if you divide the gross domestic product by the entire population, the USA suddenly ends up in fifth place. And China is then only ranked 59th among the richest countries in the world. Although gross domestic product is the most important indicator of a country’s economic performance, it says little about the prosperity of the population. But per capita GDP is. And here a small European country secures the top spot. With 116,921 dollars per capita, Luxembourg is the richest country in the world. Switzerland comes second with a gross domestic product of $87,366 per capita. Ireland secured third place with $85,205 per inhabitant. Incidentally, Germany is the 17th most prosperous country in the world. The GDP per capita in this country is 46,216 dollars. For comparison: If the gross domestic product is not divided by the total population, Germany would come fourth with a GDP of 3.8 trillion US dollars in 2020.
