Thirty parliamentarians, mostly members of LREM, and dozens of associations supporting the animal cause demanded Sunday from the government to act so that the Senate includes on its agenda the bill on animal abuse adopted in January by the deputies .

“An entire section of sentient beings is today left without sufficient protection and it is up to political decision-makers to remedy this”, plead these elected officials in an open letter to the Prime Minister, Jean Castex, published by the Sunday Newspaper.

A bill voted unanimously by the deputies

The bill adopted in January by an almost unanimous vote of deputies aims to avoid impulsive purchases of pets, which then lead to too many neglect, some 100,000 animals being abandoned each year in France.

It also aims to tighten the penalties in the event of mistreatment or to gradually prohibit the keeping of wild animals in traveling circuses and in dolphinariums, the presence of such animals on television sets, in discos or at private parties, and to close mink farms.

43 NGOs supporting parliamentarians

Among the signatories are Aurore Bergé, deputy president of the group of LREM deputies, Guillaume Gontard, leader of environmentalists in the Senate, the researcher and ex-LREM deputy Cédric Villani, and the PS vice-president of the Senate Laurence Rossignol.

Some 43 NGOs are also co-signing the text, including the Brigitte Bardot Foundation, France Nature Environnement, L.214, PETA France and the Alliance Anticorrida.
