In an interview with the JDD this Sunday on the occasion of the International Day of Children’s Rights, the President of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, believes that the voice of children is not listened to enough. “They talk and the adults don’t hear them. They feel too passive in the face of situations that would require strong reactions from adults, in the face of violence or harassment. Too many stories arrive in the courts because the situation has been allowed to deteriorate despite warnings. »
The LREM manager, who in September launched a delegation for the rights of the child within the Assembly, considers that “we need a MeToo for childhood”. “The figures of violence against children are appalling. […] They do not necessarily know that the facts of which they are victims do not constitute the norm and are prohibited by law. There is progress to be made in schools. »
She insists, concerning sexual violence: “To reveal incest, the child must already be aware that the adult has crossed the line and left the conflict of loyalty. It may take a long time.”
“It is not enough to pass laws”
If Yaël Braun-Pivet considers that the recent laws on ordinary educational violence, on harassment or on consent have made it possible to better protect children, it is now necessary to “ensure their implementation” with a “commitment of the entire society”. “It is not enough to pass laws to solve the problems,” she adds.
The President of the National Assembly, also a mother of five children, confides that this subject resonates personally with her. “My mother was a child beaten by her stepfather, she tells the JDD. When she ran away to find help at the police station, the police systematically drove her home. […] This story forged me as a woman and a politician. »
