Markus Braun sits in the dock on Monday morning and looks gruffly into the courtroom. He is flanked only by one lawyer, his public defender Theres Kraußlach. It is a picture that has been presenting itself for quite some time in the Wirecard trial – with one difference: Kraußlach is no longer a defender of Braun, she is the Defense attorney. Since last week at the latest, when Braun’s star attorney Alfred Dierlamm resigned along with the rest of his law firm, Kraußlach has been at the center of one of the largest white collar criminal cases in German judicial history.
