The vulva, the scalpel and aesthetic injunctions

In “ Everything is explained », The sexuality meeting of our podcast Wait a minute !, we are going to talk about the vulva, the vagina, aesthetic injunctions on the female sex, and surgery. At the beginning of September, Maeva Ghennam, influencer with three million subscribers, promotes radiofrequency and mesotherapy sessions in order to rejuvenate her sex. Controversy, apologies from the young woman, Minister Marlène Schiappa
calls out to the college national of French gynecologists and obstetricians. She wonders that some practitioners promote “surgical practices not proven by scientific studies”.

Know and understand the female sex

In this podcast, we take a look at the anatomy of the female sex. And to wonder about diktats, which come in part from the pornographic universe, which weigh on the private parts of the women. To discuss, Doctor Julia Maruani, medical gynecologist, secretary general of the National Federation of Colleges of Medical Gynecology.

What is the difference between the vulva and the vagina? What does the female sex look like? What is the maintenance of the female sex to stay healthy? What are the surgeries and lasers on sex, and in which cases are they performed? These are some of the questions in this exchange. The opportunity, also, to recall the growing weight of a diktat on the aspect of the female sex.

Pressure for a uniform appearance of the female sex

According to Doctor Julia Maruani, “for several years now, women have been questioning themselves about the“ normality ”(…) of their genitals. All this because of the aesthetic dictates mainly conveyed by pornography. Of course, it is not only the genitals that are subject to these beauty dictates, the physical injunctions imposed on women there are plenty of them, but it has indeed extended, including to the vulva ”

Regarding plastic surgery of the labia minora, the gynecologist regrets the normalization of the appearance of the female sex: “all the vulvae are exactly the same, if possible without hair and without anything protruding. And as a gynecologist, I’m shocked, because that aspect is that of a vulva, of a woman before puberty. We can therefore wonder about what is conveyed in standardization. We must therefore help these women in consultation. (…) I ask them why? What led to this? Is it because of a boy who laughed at her? Do they really feel embarrassed? What motivates them? “

“The body of the woman is not a body without hair, without marks, smooth, remade, completely shaved”, recalls the doctor Julia Maruani. “As all bodies are different, all female sexes are different. What is in the interest of all human beings is to be different. Today, adolescent girls who are subjected to all these physical injunctions, to all these beauty dictates, it is difficult for them to navigate. I think it is through information, through reassurance, that we can manage not to end up with young women who are undergoing surgery, and who might regret it ”.
