the video camera with 5.7K in the test

The Panasonic Lumix GH6, as much was already clear after the first rumors and announcements, is the next generation of the video camera. As of today, one thing is certain: with the new 25 megapixel sensor and new image processor, it can handle professional video formats up to 5.7K/60p or up to 4:2:2 10-bit. We have already tested the camera intensively and provide a hands-on.

For clarity: the color depth of Apple’s ProRes HQ with 422 and There are 10 bits at 5.7K resolution only up to a frame rate of 30, if you need 60 or 50 frames per second, you have to 4:2:0 10-bit switch. In addition, the camera provides an anamorphic 4:3 mode 5.8K 30p/25p/24p 4:2:0 10-bit. The LUMIX GH6 also manages internal recording in 4:2:2 10-bit Cinema 4K/60p as well as parallel output in 4:2:2 10-bit Cinema 4K/60p via HDMI. There are again the time-lapse modes in 4K and slow-motion with up to 300 frames in full HD. In addition, it can output via HDMI as RAW to Cinema 4K/120p to the Atomos Ninja V+. Active cooling now ensures that the amounts of data from the sensor and image processor are also permanently managed and a uninterrupted infinite recording is guaranteed.

Hands-on: Panasonic Lumix GH6 – the video camera with 5.7K resolution and high dynamic range

Not just the higher amounts of data, but explicitly those dynamic range extension is particularly computationally intensive, because Panasonic reads the two native sensitivities of the sensor and converts them into an image in real time, which should then contain correspondingly more dynamics. Just have a look at our test video – of course we tried it out right away. Speaking of data volumes: Panasonic is now installing because of the data rates two different card slots: The fast CFexpress B and one for the cheaper SD cards, which cannot store all video formats. In view of this computing power and the cooling, the case has become a bit deeper. This is now also possible for this 3-inch display (613,000 RGB pixels) fold away. The 0.76 inch display in the viewfinder delivers 1,226,667 RGB pixels. Fortunately, the camera again provides video assistance functions such as waveform monitor, zebra pattern, brightness spot metering, frame marking, anamorphic decompression display and shows with a red recording frame and tally recording indicators on the front and back that the recording is in progress .

The Panasonic Lumix GH6 makes 5.7K video with 50 or 60 full frames if desired – but then only in 4:2:0 10 bit.

We also examine the ergonomics in detail in our hands-on and also show what you can expect from the image stabilizer. Because here there is again a stabilization by the (suitable) optics as well as via the correspondingly mounted sensor. There is also electronic stabilization. One of the speculations surrounding the GH6 was autofocus, as many expected phase autofocus. What Panasonic delivers and what the GH6 when focusing performs, we also show above in the video and last but not least in the hands-on. Good news: in combination with the XLR-1 adapter, the GH6 can record 4-channel sound and the camera provides a direct button on the top for easier control and regulation.

The three-inch LC display on the back of the Panasonic Lumix GH 6 can now also be folded away.

The GH6 is from March 2022 for 2,199.99 euros (RRP) as housing or from 2,799.99 euros (RRP) included in the kit 12-60mm lens available. If you already own lenses: you need them a firmware updatewhich should be available for the different optics from March.
