The 2022 European handball championship begins. Despite many failures, the teams expect a spectacular tournament. France can catch up with Sweden this year, Spain want the triple.

Even in the run-up to this year’s European men’s handball championship in Hungary and Slovakia, the list of failures among the participating nations is long. On the German side, the two top performers Hendrik Pekeler and Fabian Wiede will be missing. Nevertheless, the tournament will once again be a showcase for budding handball stars and celebrated veterans. The French handball legend Nikola Karabatic is hoping for his fourth European Championship title, which would make him the most successful European Championship player alongside the Swede Markus Wislander.

The European title would put Germany in second place in the list of the most successful nations next to France – the Swedes have celebrated the most successes with four titles so far.
