Vitel’homme Innocent and his brutal gang have seized power over parts of the Haitian capital Porte-au-Prince. For the FBI, Innocent is one of the ten most wanted criminals in the world. A reporter from the US broadcaster CNN has now managed to meet with Innocent and conduct an interview. He lives in a luxury villa, guarded by his armed gang. He is accused of destabilizing a nation and claims to be under divine protection. The FBI has put a bounty of around $2 million on his head for alleged kidnappings.
Gang crime scares many people away. There have never been many tourists in this poor country. But now almost no one comes anymore. Many tourist guides are therefore unemployed. A new transitional government, supported by 15 Caribbean states and the USA, gives hope. They want to ensure peace and enable democratic elections.
