The vaccination of teachers, teachers and educational staff against Covid-19 will begin “probably around mid-April”, first by those who work with children “with disabilities”, said on Sunday the Minister of Education Jean-Michel Blanquer. “Regarding the teachers, our objective is that it is during the month of April according to priority rules that we are currently working”, declared the minister in the program. Political questions from France Inter, France Télévisions, franceinfo and The world.

“In particular, it will start with those who take care of children with disabilities,” he continued. “We will continue normally with those who take care of kindergarten children” and “then, it will be a reasoning by age, all this work is currently done with the health authorities”. Asked about the start date of the teachers’ vaccination, he later said: “Probably around mid-April”. “What is desirable is that we succeed in doing that over the next two months,” added Jean-Michel Blanquer.

Non-teaching staff also concerned

The minister assured that these vaccinations would also concern non-teaching staff, that is to say “all those who work in school, college and high school”. In a televised address on March 31, President Emmanuel Macron announced that vaccination would be extended to all people over the age of 60 on April 16, then to all those over 50 on May 15. He also spoke of a “specific strategy” for “all the most exposed professions”, in particular teachers.

Schools have been closed since Friday evening and the spring holidays have been unified in France from April 12, before a return to school on April 26 in face-to-face in schools and in distance for one more week in colleges and high schools. In a column published in the Sunday newspaper, the mayor of Saint-Denis, Mathieu Hanotin, and the president of the department of Seine-Saint-Denis, Stéphane Troussel, both socialists, called on Prime Minister Jean Castex to “extend without delay” the vaccination to school staff during holidays.
