the tagesschau podcast · Shlomo, the Holocaust and the Beast of Sobibor · ARD Audiothek

Stanislaw Szmajzner, known as Shlomo, was sent to the Sobibor extermination camp at the age of 15. There he meets the brutal SS man Gustav Wagner. Shlomo’s family is murdered in the gas chamber, he himself survives the Holocaust, also because Wagner chooses him as a goldsmith: he is to make jewelry for the SS. Decades later, in a police station in São Paulo, Brazil, Shlomo again faces Wagner, the beast from Sobibor. Does Shlomo, the survivor, seek justice – or revenge? NDR investigative reporter Antonius Kempmann and his WDR colleague Martin Kaul have been compiling Shlomo’s story for years and collecting evidence of how the confrontation between the survivor and the Nazi criminal finally ended. A three-part television film by NDR/WDR tells the story of Shlomo’s life, his survival and his unlikely escape from Sobibor, the fateful meeting in Brazil. In a five-part podcast (also WDR and NDR), the journalists follow Shlomo’s footsteps and investigate what he has to do with the rumors surrounding Wagner’s death.
