“The Sign in Sidney Breastein’s Window” on Broadway Culture

“The Sign in Sidney Breastein’s Window” was first performed on October 15, 1964. The author Lorraine Hansberry was then thirty-four years old and already world-famous for the great success of her first play “A Raisin in the Sun”, which is now rightly regarded as one of the great portraits of black life of the 20th century. When “Sidney Breastein” premiered, Hansberry was already suffering from pancreatic cancer. On the night of her death, just three months after the premiere, on January 15, 1965, the play was canceled again.
