  • The Rennes cafes will however be able to broadcast the meetings indoors, on condition that they respect the sanitary protocol and the 11 p.m. curfew.
  • The measure seems rather well accepted by the owners of bars who fear more than all the mess.

With the good weather and the shift of the curfew to 11 p.m., the terraces may be armored in the coming days in Rennes. The kickoff of Euro football on Friday also promised warm lively evenings in the bars and restaurants of the Breton capital. But it will not be, at least until June 30. Perhaps still scalded by the overflows that occurred on May 19 for the reopening of the terraces, the Rennes municipality has decided to ban the broadcasting of matches outdoors.

The city justifies itself by explaining that “gatherings on public roads are always limited to a maximum of 10 people” and that “football matches are conducive to gatherings”, underlines Cyrille Morel, the deputy in charge of Civil Security and nightlife. In the absence of a specific framework defined for the duration of the competition, the city of Rennes has therefore decided to take the lead. Unlike other cities like Lyon for example, it will therefore not issue any authorization to bar and restaurant owners wishing to install a screen on their terrace.

Make customers leave before the end of the match

The measure is of course aimed at avoiding chaos. But also to enforce the 11 p.m. curfew, in effect until June 30. “With a match starting at 9 pm, we can expect an end of the game around 10:45 pm, underlines Cyrille Morel. But by this time, managers will have already tidied up their terrace. So it seems very complicated to tell customers to leave before the end of the match. “

For meetings scheduled at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., there will also be no derogation. To attend the Euro, supporters will have to be content with their sofa or attend the meetings inside the bars. “Nothing prevents the managers from broadcasting the match in their establishment, provided they respect the sanitary rules and the curfew”, specifies Cyrille Morel.

“No time to do anything”

Among the owners of bars in Rennes, the decision of the town hall seems to be well accepted. “It can be annoying for some but there is nothing illogical,” said Maxime Samson, head of Le P’tit Vélo. “Because we know very well how it goes when there is a football match,” he continues. If we put it on the terrace outside, people will gather in the street with a drink in their hand. I know some will do it anyway, but now is not the time to do anything as activity slowly picks up. “

From June 30, with the lifting of the curfew and the gauges in cafes and restaurants, the city of Rennes could however review its position and authorize the broadcasting of the final phases on the terrace. This will depend of course on the health situation but also on the course of the Blues, who hope to achieve the double World Cup-Euro.
