The region is still looking for 1,800 apprentices, especially in the food industry



Becoming an apprentice is not rocket science! And yet, this year again, the Hauts-de-France region risks not filling all the apprenticeship places offered. Promoted by the State, this form of training is receiving more and more aid, but the workforce deficit is still glaring in the region. At the beginning of September, around 1,800 positions remain to be filled * against around a thousand last year.

In question, the economic recovery which is pointing its nose after a year and a half of slowdown because of the health crisis linked to the Covid-19 epidemic. “Craftsmen need labor, especially in food trades such as butcher’s or pastry-making, but also in automobile bodywork, for example”, explains the Chamber of Trades and Crafts (CMA) of Hauts-de-France.

Strongest increase in the workforce in France

But obviously, the needs are felt everywhere. “Even if we don’t really know what to do, we can be contacted. We have 20 training branches ready to host, ”continues the CMA. Because paradoxically, Hauts-de-France is the region which has recorded the highest increase in the workforce in France (+ 20% compared to 2020).

Last year, 12,560 people (including 5,000 in the North) were trained in apprenticeship. With an employment rate, one year later, which varies between 63% and 70% depending on the sector. By way of comparison, only 40% to 45% of students who form the same degrees through school find a job in the same period of time, according to figures from the CMA.
