the prefects called to “vigilance” this summer after threats from Al-Qaida

An old threat that is coming back to the fore. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin wrote to prefects calling on them to be “vigilant” this summer in the face of the terrorist threat, after a video broadcast by Al-Qaida, we learned on Friday.

Al-Qaida broadcast on July 15 a video aimed at “condemning the blasphemy embodied by the cartoons of Mohammed” and in which France is “vilified”, writes the minister in this note dated Wednesday and consulted by AFP.

The President of the Republic and the Minister of the Interior are “explicitly targeted and cited” by this “virulent” message “calling for action against our interests”, he adds. He therefore asks the prefects to maintain a “high level” of vigilance measures in July and August, in particular within the framework of the “partial resumption of economic and cultural activities”.

“Particular vigilance must be brought to these anathemas” which “stimulate the endogenous threat”, assures the minister. And this also in anticipation of the opening in September in Paris of the trial of the attacks of November 13, adds the minister, who specifies that new safety instructions will be sent to the prefects at the start of the school year.
