The poorest even poorer since the 1st confinement

Sanitary and financial galleys. The coronavirus epidemic which has been rotting the life of the whole world since the beginning of 2020 will not only have had consequences on the health of humanity. The collateral damage to the economy has had formidable effects. In Hauts-de-France, during the first confinement, between March and May 2020, one inhabitant in four saw their financial situation deteriorate according to the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (Insee).

The decline in the standard of living of the French, observed at the end of the first confinement, was general. On the other hand, it is in Hauts-de-France that this drop has impacted the most people. In a study published on Thursday, INSEE revealed that 24% of the region’s inhabitants experienced a deterioration in their financial situation in May 2020, a point higher than the national average. In detail, it is the inhabitants of the Aisne who have suffered the most (26%) and those of the Somme the least (20%). The other three departments are tied at 25%.

Worse, it is an already fragile segment of the population that has been the most affected since the drop in living standards linked to confinement mainly concerns people with low incomes. INSEE puts forward the explanation for a greater use of short-time work in the region than elsewhere in the territory, 38% against 36% nationally.
