The Palme d’or of the Cannes Film Festival 2023 and all the winners

CANNES – End clap for this 76th edition. After twelve days of competition for the 21 feature films selected, the jury of the Cannes Film Festival 2023 chaired by Ruben Östlund presented its prizes this Saturday, May 27 during a closing ceremony hosted by Chiara Mastroianni. And to designate the successor of Without Filter by the Swedish filmmaker.

This year, the Frenchwoman Justine Triet won the Palme d’Or for Anatomy of a fall. Through the trial of a widow accused of the murder of her companion, the director performs a patient deconstruction (2H30) of the power dynamics in a couple of wealthy artists. Actress Sandra Hüller – also starring in Area of ​​Interest, Grand Prix – particularly excels there. The film will be released in theaters on August 23.

Among the other prizes of the evening, the prize for female interpretation goes to Turkish actress Merve Dizdar in Dried herbs by filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan. And that of male interpretation was given to Koji Yakusho, Japanese actor who plays an employee of the public toilets of Tokyo in Perfect Days by Wim Wenders.

The Best Director award went to French director Tran Anh Hung for The passion of Dodin Bouffant, costume adaptation of a novel on gastronomy, with Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel. As for the Grand Prize, awarded by the two legendary directors Quentin Tarantino and Roger Corman, it goes to Area of ​​Interest by Jonathan Glazer.

Extremely mastered, this film recalls the appalling “banality of evil” by describing in a clinical and chilling way the nonchalant daily life of the family of the commander of the Nazi extermination camp of Auschwitz. It is adapted from the book by Martin Amis, who died on the day of the screening in Cannes on May 19.
