The various right Didier Robert, outgoing president of the Reunion region, finished leading the first round of the regional with 31.10% of the vote this Sunday evening, in a context of strong abstention (63.56%). Didier Robert, at the head of a list of union of rights and centers, was sentenced on May 21 to 15 months suspended prison sentence and three years of ineligibility in a case of illegal taking of interest. However, he appealed, which allowed him to lead this campaign.

Behind him, Huguette Bello, the various left mayor of Saint-Paul (west of the island) and Ericka Bareigts, the PS mayor of Saint-Denis, are placed respectively in second and third position with 20.74% and 18.48 %. Of the 11 running lists, these three candidates are the only ones able to stay in the second round in this island in the Indian Ocean.

A second round for the departmental

The two other left-wing candidates, Olivier Hoarau, mayor of the Port (west of the island) and Jean-Yves Payet (Lutte Ouvrière) total 4.24% and 1.14% respectively. The total of the votes of the left, which had not succeeded in its union, exceeds that of Didier Robert.

The voters of Reunion also voted for the departmental elections. Due to the high abstention, only three pairs were elected on Sunday. In this ballot, in addition to being in the majority, it is necessary to bring together 25% of those registered on his name to be elected in the first round. A second round will therefore be necessary next Sunday in the 22 other cantons of the island.
