The scope of the one-euro bicycle ticket in Bavarian local rail transport will be expanded on August 1st: It will then also be valid within the Bavarian transport associations, including in the greater Munich and Nuremberg areas, on the routes to Bayrischzell, Tegernsee and Lenggries, and between Memmingen and Lindau. The Bavarian Railway Company announced this on Wednesday in Munich.
However, there are still time restrictions: From Monday to Friday, the one-euro bike ticket is only valid from 9 a.m., i.e. not during the morning rush hour. From March 15 to October 3, it is also only valid on Fridays between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. The one-euro ticket is not available at weekends during the summer months, but only during the winter months, specifically between October 4 and March 14.
In addition, there are still some line-specific exceptions: between Rosenheim and Salzburg and Kufstein, on direct trains between Munich and Hof and Furth im Wald and on the so-called Munich-Nuremberg Express, the one-euro ticket is still not valid.
The new one-euro ticket for bicycles was launched with the timetable change last December. Since then, taking a bicycle on local trains in Bavaria costs just one euro – no matter how far you travel and no matter how often you have to change trains. Apart from the existing spatial and temporal restrictions. According to the Bavarian Railway Company, the new bike ticket is available at ticket machines as well as on the railway companies’ websites and apps.
For times and routes that are outside the area of validity, passengers will continue to be able to use the existing tickets, such as the Bavaria bicycle day ticket. It is expected that a decision will be made towards the end of the year as to whether further restrictions on the one-euro ticket can be removed: when it is clear after the peak season in summer how the ticket affects taking bicycles on trains. Shortly after its introduction in winter, sales of the ticket were slow.
