The announcement by the mayor of Paris a few days ago had caused a lot of talk and deserved some clarification. The Olympic rings will remain on the Eiffel Tower until the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028, and “maybe” after, Anne Hidalgo said this Friday.
“The proposal I made is that until 2028, that is, until the Los Angeles Olympic Games, we will leave the rings on the Eiffel Tower and the Agitos [le symbole paralympique] on the Champs-Elysées. And maybe they will stay afterwards, we will see,” Anne Hidalgo said at a press conference.
Protests
Since the announcement by the mayor of Paris to keep this symbol of the Olympic Games, several voices have been raised to contest it. “Before any decision is made and any announcements in this matter, it is important that all procedures and consultations aimed at protecting heritage are respected,” insisted the Minister of Culture Rachida Dati, also a major opponent of Anne Hidalgo.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is conducting a feasibility study to replace the current rings with new rings, just as large but lighter, so as not to damage the structure.
