It’s official, the Orsay and Orangerie museums in Paris will now take the name of Valéry Giscard d’Estaing. The name of the former President of the Republic, who died on December 2, will be added to their names, explained a press release from the Ministry of Culture on Monday.
Adopted unanimously by the National Assembly on March 25, this addition “welcomes the commitment of President Giscard d’Estaing in favor of the creation of this great museum institution”, it is notably written.

Inaugurated by François Mitterrand in 1986, the Orsay station has been preserved from demolition under the presidency of Georges Pompidou, and classified as a historical monument with the aim of transforming it into a museum. “The official decision to initiate work and dedicate this museum to the arts of the 19th century was part of the decisive action of President Valéry Giscard d’Estaing in 1977”, explains the press release. The Musée de l’Orangerie was attached to the public establishment in 2010.
“A man of culture, passionate about the art and literature of the 19th century, Valéry Giscard d’Estaing worked with commitment and determination for the birth of the museum and followed its development. This heritage and architectural gesture was very daring, combining the preservation of a historic monument and its transformation into a museum ”, estimates the Ministry of Culture.
The change of name “the public establishment of the Musée d’Orsay and the Musée de l’Orangerie – Valéry Giscard d’Estaing” will soon be enacted by a Council of State decree.
