By the end of this book, the “Heimat” films and their creator have finally become inseparable. The filmmaker Edgar Reitz has repeatedly included his own life, from his childhood in the Hunsrück and his departure in Munich, into the television series, which now runs for sixty hours. You can confidently call it his life’s work. “I think,” he told his producer as he began writing Heimat, “I found an oil well in my backyard.” At least that’s what it says in his memoirs, “Movie Time, Life Time: Memories.”
