She rides on success. The little Mermaid topped the North American box office for its first weekend in theaters. The live-action Disney film takes advantage of the Memorial Day holiday on Monday in the United States, according to Exhibitor Relations. According to the specialized firm, the film collected 117.5 million dollars at the American and Canadian box office as well as 68 million internationally.
“Disney has been making live-action movie remakes a powerful phenomenon for a decade,” analyst David A. Gross wrote in his FranchiseRe newsletter. He notes, however, that The little Mermaid still does less well for its first weekend than The Lion King in 2019 (191.8 million) and The beauty and the Beast in 2017 ($174.8 million).
Vin Diesel is no match for Ariel
Ariel and her friends are no less dethroning Fast and Furious X, which ranks second with just $29.5 million raised over the weekend. That’s less than half of what Universal’s action movie, which is part of the franchise Fast & Furioushad garnered the previous weekend when it was released.
The Marvel movie Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 and the animated movie Super Mario Bros, the movie, inspired by the video game of the same name, also fell one place each, to third and fourth, with receipts of $25.3 million and $7.7 million respectively. Sony’s action comedy The Machine grossed $5.8 million and ranked fifth.
