The jacket becomes compulsory, the tie “recommended” and the shorts prohibited

Hard blow for Louis Boyard. During the debate which had agitated the National Assembly this summer on the good dress to adopt in the hemicycle, the young deputy LFI had proposed to ban costumes “which cost more than one minimum wage”, judging them “indecent”. Conversely, the right led by Eric Ciotti pointed to a “sloppy” left, an adjective launched by Renaud Muselier, and wanted to make the tie compulsory. The office of the Assembly, meeting this Wednesday on the subject, rather decided in favor of the Republicans.

To be precise, the tie only becomes “recommended”, but the wearing of the jacket becomes compulsory for men. Other clothes affected by the controversy, shorts and bermudas are officially banned. “The outfit must be neutral, in line with the solemnity of the place. The outfit must remain suitable and not detained or, a fortiori, neglected”, specifies the text adopted by the office of the Assembly, chaired by Yaël Braun-Pivet.

This text allows at least to clarify the vague notion of “dress code” which until now took the place of dress code. But the obligation to wear a jacket marks a certain decline, while the office had ruled on the right for deputies to sit without a jacket or tie in 2017, with the entry into the Assembly of Insoumis. Women’s attire has not been amended.
