“I hadn’t even paid attention to it.” This father is obviously not very observant. Because for a little over a month, black tarpaulins have covered all the gates surrounding the Champion de Cicé school group in Rennes, where her daughter is educated. “We were told that it was for the safety of our children, to prevent them from witnessing the drug trafficking which is taking place before their eyes”, indicates a young mother, a little better informed.
Located in the Cleunay district, southwest of the Breton capital, the place is indeed a well-known place of dealings. It was there that a 23-year-old Chechen was shot and killed on March 17 in a settling of scores over drug trafficking. Facts of rare violence which led the authorities to act in this neighborhood taken hostage by the dealers. “They do that in plain sight,” testifies a local resident. They quietly set up their chairs in the street and they wait for customers all day long ”.
“This in no way solves the problems of the neighborhood”
At the request of the educational team of this nursery and elementary school, which accommodates nearly 450 students, the city of Rennes has therefore resolved to install on April 26 a breeze on the school fence. “This is not a miracle solution, but it at least makes it possible to preserve the privacy of the students when they are in the courtyard,” explains Lénaïg Briéro, the assistant in charge of security.
Among the parents of students, opinions differ on this black tarpaulin which should be covered with plants by the fall. “It’s good for the safety of our children, at least they do not see all the bullshit that these wankers (sic) do”, indicates this father, who no longer recognizes the neighborhood where he was born. Others are more circumspect about its usefulness. “It’s already very ugly,” said this young mother. And above all, it does not solve the basic problems of the neighborhood. Because the dealers are always there and our children always see them when they leave school. “
“The police are at work”, assures the security assistant
In this environment, she says she fears for their safety every time. “Given the latest events, I am not reassured when they have to go home alone,” she says. And when they are in school, they hear things that are not their age. They already know very well what cannabis and cocaine are. “
Aware of the anguish experienced by the inhabitants, Lénaïg Briéro relies on the national police “who are at work and harass the dealers on a daily basis to hamper their traffic”. “But it is a long-term job, in this sector but as everywhere else”, indicates the elected.
