‘Daughter of today, Children of form, We love to laugh and dance!’ This catchy phrase welcomes viewers to the animated series Cat’s Eyes, adapted from the beloved manga by Tsukasa Hôjô. Launched in 1983 in Japan, the show made its television debut in 1986 on FR3 and has been captivating audiences since 2004, making a significant impact on multiple generations.
The Intriguing Tale of Three Sisters
The narrative revolves around three sisters—Tam, Alex, and Sylia—who lead double lives. By day, they run the Cat’s Eye café, but as night falls, they transform into skilled burglars, reclaiming precious artworks that once belonged to their father, who mysteriously vanished. Each heist is marked by a signature card left behind, but what twists and turns await them in their thrilling escapades?
The complete series can be streamed on the TF1+ platform.
The final episode of the series, the 73rd overall and 37th of season 2, is titled “Lifting the Veil” in French and “The Play” in the original version. The episode kicks off with Sylia and Tam plotting their next heist: a stunning diamond brooch. However, their plans take a turn when Alex bursts in to share her news about a play she has written.
Initially intrigued, the sisters soon discover that Alex’s play, Cat’s or the Burglary of Charm, is inspired by their own lives and is set to be performed. Alex invites her sisters to portray their own characters, while they assist her in bringing the production to life.
As night descends, Sylia and Tam slip away to execute their plan to steal the coveted brooch. The task proves challenging, as the jewel is secured in a safe concealed behind a mirror. In a stroke of inspiration, they persuade Alex to cast Javote Founiac, the brooch’s owner and a former schoolmate, in her play.
The plot twist allows for the diamond to be part of the performance, and Javote, flattered by the role, agrees to lend her brooch for the show.
Quentin, Tam’s boyfriend, also seeks a part in the play, hoping that arresting Cat’s Eyes will boost his career. His superior, Commissioner Bruno, supports this move, believing it will enhance the police’s public image.
Meanwhile, Tamara arranges for a replica of the brooch for a planned exchange. However, during the performance, Javote surprises everyone by wearing a diamond ring instead of the brooch, complicating Cat’s Eyes’ scheme until Sylia devises a new plan, though she keeps it under wraps.
As the play unfolds, it reveals that Quentin might lose his job if he cannot apprehend Cat’s Eyes before their next heist, and he has vowed to marry Tam only after catching them. Backstage, Alex hurriedly rewrites the script to accommodate Javote’s unexpected change. She discreetly feeds the new lines to her cast.
The storyline of the play—and Cat’s Eyes’ plan—now revolves around the notion that Javote’s maid, Marie-Laure, is actually an undercover member of Cat’s Eyes. When Quentin tries to arrest her, he realizes it is his girlfriend Tam, leading him to abandon his pursuit and resign from his position to pursue their love. Tam ultimately confesses to him, hoping he can keep his cherished job.
In an unexpected twist, Javote notices her diamond ring and refuses to believe that Tam is with Cat’s Eyes, as nothing was stolen. Consequently, Tam is released, and Quentin finds himself reinstated in the police force. The play concludes.
The episode wraps up with the commissioner discovering that the diamond ring Javote wore was, in fact, a replica, allowing Cat’s Eyes to once again escape with the loot! Their identities remain concealed, and Quentin returns to his duties.
Regrettably for fans, this marks the conclusion of the series: the Chamade sisters will never uncover the mystery of their father’s disappearance on screen, and this finale lacks the action fans have come to love about Cat’s Eyes. A bittersweet ending, indeed.
