This year there was no way around Netflix. The streaming service dominated searches on Google for series in 2022.

Netflix is once again living up to its role as the top dog in the streaming universe this year, as Google’s 2022 year in review shows. The search engine giant has evaluated which series have recorded the highest increase in search interest in Germany compared to the previous year.

Netflix secures four spots in the top ten

The most trending was “Dahmer: Monsters: The Story of Jeffrey Dahmer”. The Netflix production is about the real US serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer (1960-1994), who is embodied in the mini-series by Evan Peters (35). Netflix also grabs second place in the top ten – with “Stranger Things”. In 2022, the streaming service released the fourth season of the popular mystery series about Eleven, played by Millie Bobby Brown (18), and a group of young friends.

The Netflix mini-series “The Watcher”, for which Ryan Murphy (57) and Ian Brennan (44) are responsible, as with “Dahmer”, also ranks fifth. “Inventing Anna,” the streaming service’s last production on the list, grabs sixth place. It is about a journalist who researches the case of the imposter Anna Sorokin (31).

The US broadcaster HBO is also prominently represented in the ranking with the “Game of Thrones” spin-off “House of the Dragon” in third place and “Euphoria” in fourth place. And with “LOL: Last One Laughing” from Amazon Prime Video and “Der Palast”, which can be streamed in the ZDF media library, there are also two German productions in seventh and eighth place. Superheroes and villains complete the top ten on the nine and ten with the Marvel series “Moon Knight” (Disney+) and “The Boys” (Amazon Prime Video). Surprising: Amazon’s prestige project “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” cannot be placed.

Netflix even leads in the movies

Just as surprisingly, Netflix also tops the top ten for movies. At the top of the trending search terms in this category is the star-studded satire “Don’t Look Up”, which was published at the end of 2021, as Google announced when asked by the news agency spot on news. The film by Adam McKay (54) includes Leonardo DiCaprio (48), Meryl Streep (73), Jennifer Lawrence (32) and Timothée Chalamet (26).

The horror film “Smile – Do you see it too?” lands with a smile on the second and Marvel’s “Eternals” with Angelina Jolie (47) and Salma Hayek (56) in third place. The video game adaptation “Uncharted” and thus also “Spider-Man” star Tom Holland (26) made it to fourth place – ahead of Tom Cruise (60) in his cult role as a fighter pilot. The general search term “Top Gun” flies to five thanks to the sequel “Top Gun: Maverick”, which was released this year.

Dwayne Johnson’s (50) “Black Adam” narrowly misses the top five in sixth place, but can position itself ahead of “Thor: Love and Thunder”, as well as “Rheingold” and “Encanto”, which occupy places seven to ninth. On the ten there is Netflix again, with the love film “Purple Hearts”.
