Its theatrical release should not fail to revive the debates in the region. Shot in Brittany this fall, the film “Green Algae, the Forbidden Story” will be released in theaters on July 12. Directed by Pierre Jolivet and produced by the company 2.4.7 Films, this feature film is an adaptation of the comic book by journalist Inès Léraud and cartoonist Pierre Van Hove.
Released in 2019, this survey looks back on this scourge of green algae which has been poisoning Brittany for several decades. “Nobody wants to see it and the authorities are even trying to hide it”, confided Inès Léraud to 20 minutes when the comic came out.
Aid of 250,000 euros despite the controversy
We therefore understand why the film crews were not welcomed with a red carpet in the region. Even before the cameras were rolling, several elected officials had announced that they would not help in any way in its realization. Despite the controversy, the Brittany region had however granted in November a subsidy of 250,000 euros to the production company to the chagrin of certain elected officials who, without having seen the film, had estimated that it was “chargeable” and was going to harm the image of the region.
In order not to fuel the controversy, the production team had preferred to play it discreet before and during the shooting. “The film will not fall into the Manichaeism that such a subject could arouse”, had assured Marc-Antoine Robert and Xavier Rigault.
