To put the idea in the persuasive tone of a lay preacher waving a cardboard sign in the subway tunnel: the end of the internet as we know it is near! On Thursday, the Californian start-up Open AI released so-called plug-ins for its artificial intelligence chatbot GPT-4. At first glance, this was a simple product extension, but the deceptive thing about digital progress is that major developments begin with banalities. In 1994, a colorful window on the previously monochromatic screen of the Internet marked the beginning of the World Wide Web with its tremendous shocks to the global economy. Four years later, Google launched the so-called Web 2.0 with its sorting machines and social networks, which overthrew dictatorships and undermined democracies. With its buttonless phone in 2007, Apple turned the digital space into an omnipresent parallel world.
