“The Empress” on Netflix: The search for the true character of Sisi

The new series “The Empress” is well worth seeing on Netflix. Showrunner Katharina Eyssen speaks in the stern– Conversation about the Sisi trend 2022, the search for the true character of this extraordinary woman – and why Disney has the imperial Franzl uniforms on its conscience.

Ms. Eyssen, you were born in Possenhofen on Lake Starnberg, where young Sisi spent her childhood. How close is this young woman to you?
The story of “Sisi” has always surrounded me. I grew up in Munich, which in turn was also Elisabeth’s place of birth. Still, like most people, I first got to know them through pop culture viewing. Including, of course, the “Sissi” films from the 1960s. We watched the movies a lot when we were teenagers and drank a strawberry schnapps every time someone said “Imperial Highness” in them. For us it was kitsch. Quite apart from that, I always found Romy Schneider fascinating and the radiance she has given the character over the decades.
