The driver of the vehicle targeted by police fire after refusing to comply in Vénissieux (Rhône), on the night of Thursday to Friday August 19, is “died as a result of his injuries, late yesterday evening, at the Lyon Sud hospital”announced the Lyon prosecutor’s office in a press release on Saturday.

This 26-year-old driver from the Annecy region was hospitalized and his vital prognosis was “very committed” Friday. The passenger of this vehicle, 20 years old, was killed during police shootings on the night of Thursday to Friday.

The two police officers heard by the IGPN (General Inspectorate of the National Police) were released on Friday evening, according to the prosecution. The first elements “seem to support the self-defense hypothesis”, raises the floor. However, “additional investigations – in particular a reconstitution and ballistic expertise – will have to be carried out to confirm the exact circumstances in which the police used their weapons”.

According to the Lyon public prosecutor’s office, the driver’s criminal record bore the mention of nine convictions. This young man was wanted at the time of the events “in the context of an open investigation for aggravated theft of vehicles”.

The deceased passenger was 20 years old and originally from Lyon. “He was known to the police, his criminal record does not, however, mention any conviction”, details the floor.

Two investigations were opened by the Lyon public prosecutor’s office after the events, one for “concealment of theft, aggravated refusal to comply and violence with a weapon against law enforcement officers entrusted to the DDSP” and another for “violence with a weapon by persons vested with public authority who caused death without intention to cause it”, it was entrusted to the General Inspectorate of the National Police.
