the daytime hot water tank cut-off test is “a great success”, reveals Enedis

“It’s a great success”, says Thierry Sudret, operations and systems manager at Enedis. He reveals to France Bleu the first assessment of a measure put in place in October, intended to save energy, and which had caused a stir: cut off the heating of private water tanks between noon and 2 p.m. to shift it during the night.

Result: this measure saved 2.4 gigawatts of power, or the equivalent of the consumption of 2.4 million French people. “It’s more than the consumption of Paris”, he rejoices. An economy that could make a difference this winter, at the height of the crisis, and perhaps save us from cuts.

No hot water cut

When this measure was announced, many French people had worried about not having access to hot water, but Thierry Sudret reminds us that it is in no way about that. “The only difference is that the water tank heating is not on” between noon and 2 p.m. “People will still have hot water but the tank does not heat up during this period. On the other hand, it heats up during the night”, which is more than enough, he explains. And if you ever empty your whole hot water tank, you can always “force the operation of the hot water tank”.

“This device, which is almost painless for people, is very effective, since we save 2.4 gigawatts, which is considerable, and we have had no complaints, so it is a great success”he concludes.
