The Czech town of Litomyšl celebrates the composer Bedřich Smetana. – Culture

A Renaissance castle, not far from a church and a former school, which now houses the Litomyšl Regional Museum. Bedřich Smetana started school here at the age of five, when he was already playing the violin, and a little later the piano. There is still no train station, but once a year music lovers from all over the Czech Republic find their way here to the festival for the composer, who was born in the small town on March 2, 1824. This year, the year of his 200th birthday, “Smetana’s Litomyšl” has been expanded considerably. Over the course of the four weeks, opera ensembles from all over the country will travel to the festival to perform all eight of Smetana’s operas.
