The crazy comedy “Everything Everywhere All At Once” wins the day

Everything Everywhere All at Once has been at the top of American cinema since Sunday evening. Directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the film swept the bet at the 95th Academy Awards with seven golden statuettes, including that of best picture, beating In the west, nothing is new who got four.

A black hole in the shape of a bagel, dildos used as nunchakus, philosophical rocks: the ingredients of this crazy comedy made it, however, on paper too crazy a candidate for the Academy. But the film ended up establishing itself as the ultra-favorite, notably winning the Oscar for best director.

A hit in theaters

“Thank you to the Academy. Thanks to studio A24. You saw our weirdness and supported us for a year,” film producer Jonathan Wang said as he received the statuette. This independent film has also met with unexpected success in theaters, with more than 100 million dollars in revenue.

This feature film chronicles the adventures of Evelyn Wang, a Chinese-American trader, played by Michelle Yeoh, overwhelmed by her family worries and her troubles with the tax authorities. In the midst of her daily slump, she discovers the existence of parallel universes and suddenly finds herself tasked with saving humanity from an evil force that turns out to be the alter ego of her lesbian and depressed daughter.

Scripted for Jackie Chan, but rewritten for Michelle Yeoh

This film full of crazy ideas and pop references works because “the only thing that remains in you is the emotion of love”, explained Michelle Yeoh to the Los Angeles Times. Multicultural, this feature film where the characters alternate between English, Mandarin and Cantonese also offers new perspectives, transforming an ordinary family of Chinese immigrants into superheroes.

The initial script focused on a male protagonist, thought for Jackie Chan. Her rewrite for Michelle Yeoh, another martial arts superstar, gives her a feminist tone, which allowed the Malaysian actress to show all the diversity of her game and win the Oscar for best actress.

The film also brought Vietnamese-born actor Ke Huy Quan, who plays the endearing Waymond, Evelyn’s husband, into the limelight. Revealed at age 12 in 1984 in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doomthe actor who had almost given up his profession, for lack of roles, won the Oscar for best supporting actor.
