The Benalla case, the first trial to splash the Macron presidency

In our new episode of podcast Wait a minute !, we are talking about the trial of former Elysée employee Alexandre Benalla, who has been appearing before the Paris court since Monday, September 13. The thirty-something is suspected of 12 crimes, including “willful violence in meetings” and “usurpation of the function of police officer” for having brutalized a couple during the demonstrations of May 1, 2018 in Paris. The images of the altercation had triggered the first scandal of the presidency of Emmanuel Macron. A scandal that lasted several months, fueled by the revelations of the press and the hearings of parliamentary commissions of inquiry.

The former collaborator of the president will also have to explain the photo, taken on April 28, 2017, in which he poses with a young woman and two men, a weapon in his hand. For “carrying without cause of a category B weapon”, Alexandre Benalla risks seven years in prison and a 100,000 euros fine. In this episode, Thibaut Chevillard enlightens us on the stakes of this first trial of the Macron era. The journalist in the “police-justice” section of 20 minutes portrays Alexandre Benalla, the former close to power, as well as the gray areas surrounding this case judged seven months before the French presidential election.
