The authors Michael Köhlmeier and Monika Helfer in conversation – culture

The award-winning author Michael Köhlmeier became known with retellings of Greek sagas and more than two dozen novels. Monika Helfer’s success came late, “Die Bagage” and “Vati”, in which she tells the story of her family, became bestsellers. Helpers, 75, and Köhlmeier, 73, have been married for 42 years. The couple lives in Hohenems in Vorarlberg and in Vienna, where the conversation takes place shortly before the start of the Leipzig Book Fair. Köhlmeier travels there – reluctantly, as he emphasizes, because he doesn’t like trade fairs. And helpers “do not really like” appearances at all.
