The assailant indicted for “attempted murder”, announces the prosecutor

After the attack in Annecy which caused national emotion, the suspect was arrested in just a few minutes. Forty-eight hours in police custody later, he is now indicted for “attempted murder”. The assailant “did not wish to speak” before the investigating magistrates, indicates the prosecutor. The vital prognosis is “no longer engaged” for the victims, she added.

The man of Syrian nationality, born in 1991, had obtained refugee status in Sweden, where he lived for ten years. He had applied for asylum in France a few months ago, declaring himself a “Christian from Syria”. During his attack, during which he stabbed four children aged 22 to 36 months in a park in Annecy, he allegedly shouted “in the name of Jesus Christ”. But the prosecution has so far not retained any terrorist motive, which explains the qualification of “assassination attempts”.
