Lidl is recalling some of its cannabis products because of possible “mood swings and fatigue”. As a precaution, the discounter had already taken the biscuits, bars and teas out of its range.
The discounter Lidl is recalling a number of cannabis products and a hemp oil because of an increased content of the active ingredient THC. “Consumption of these foods can have undesirable health consequences, such as mood swings and fatigue,” warned Lidl in a press release today. Customers should pay attention to the recall and stop using the products.
Affected are hemp biscuits of the varieties Chocolate, Classic, Cranberry and Hash, which are sold under the name “Mary & Juana”, and the cannabis tea “Tea of mind”. Consumers should also not consume the protein bar “Raw Cannabis Protein Bar Apple”. The food is all produced by the Czech manufacturer Euphoria Trade. The cold-pressed “Vita D’or Bio Hemp Oil” comes from the manufacturer P. Brändle.
According to Lidl, the products can be returned in all branches without presenting the receipt. The company said the purchase price will be fully reimbursed.
Prosecutors had confiscated items
Lidl had included 21 products such as “cannabis cookies”, “hash brownies” or “cannabis energy drinks” in the promotional range. They were sold by the startup “The Green Dealers”.
But two weeks ago the discounter had already taken all hemp products out of sale again – also because some of them were scrutinized by the Heilbronn public prosecutor. Lidl had announced that it was working closely with the authorities.
According to their own statements, the police had seized “a few products” from the hemp range in a discount store in Rosenheim in Upper Bavaria for the investigation. In addition to cookies and muffins, drinks were also sent to the State Criminal Police Office.
Articles with THC content prohibited
According to the investigators, it is about a possible violation of the Narcotics Act. According to a spokesman for the public prosecutor’s office, it is investigating “whether the products that are offered there contain THC or CBD”. However, it is only a test process, not an investigative process.
Actually, the products shouldn’t have an intoxicating effect. Lidl had advertised them as CBD- and THC-free in its brochures. Instead, the articles should convince with their taste and presentation. “Only hemp seeds are used in the recipes for the typical hemp taste,” a Lidl spokesman told t-online.
According to the Federal Office for Consumer Protection, approval is required for products with cannabidiol (CBD). The trade in articles with a higher content of intoxicating tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is prohibited in Germany. THC is a psychoactive substance found in plants belonging to the hemp (cannabis) genus. The main part of the intoxicating effect is attributed to THC.
