Third division team 1860 Munich surprisingly bowled out of the DFB Cup after a hot cup duel. A lightning goal was enough for the “Löwen” to win 1-0 (1-0).

After just five minutes, Stefan Lex scored the goal of the evening in front of 15,000 enthusiastic spectators in the stadium on Grünwalder Strasse in Munich. At the second division Schalke top striker Simon Terodde sat on the bench for an hour.

An entertaining cup duel on Giesing’s heights quickly developed. That was also because the Schalke were caught off guard. Sascha Mölders easily shook Darko Churlinov off on the right side, then he passed into the middle, where Stefan Lex overcame goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann after a quick turn – Lex’s first competitive goal of the season.

Grammozis changes his plan early on

After the lightning gate, the “lion” fans were right there. With the leadership behind us and the great atmosphere in the stands, 1860 continued to make a lot of steam – no class difference was found at any point in the game.

Schalke coach Dimitrios Grammozis changed his tactics early on. In the middle of the first half he took the overwhelmed Churlinov out and brought in top preparer Thomas Ouwejan, who, like second division record scorer Simon Terodde, initially sat surprisingly on the bench and should actually be spared.

Red card for Thiaw

But even Ouwejan could not turn the game in favor of the Royal Blues. Instead, Schalke had to accept the next blow right after the restart – a red card for Malick Thiaw. The S04 defender could only stop Lex with the emergency brake.

Strong lion keeper Hiller

After an hour the time had come. Grammozis brought striker Simon Terodde and midfield veteran Danny Latza. Schalke had better chances, especially through Bülter, who failed several times against the strong 1860 goalkeeper Marco Hiller.

But the lions also remained dangerous. Lex missed the preliminary decision in the 68th minute when he played the ferryman and then only hit the outside netting. Both teams continued to apply a lot of pressure. There was no more goal – 1860 Munich is in the round of 16.
