Laura Siegemund prevented a collective first round of German tennis women at the Australian Open.

The 34-year-old prevailed in her opening match against the Italian Lucia Bronzetti with 2: 6, 6: 4 and 6: 3 and meets the Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu in the second round. The four other German starters in Melbourne had failed at the opening hurdle.

Wimbledon semi-finalist Tatjana Maria was also hit on Wednesday. The 35-year-old was beaten by the Italian qualifier Lucrezia Stefanini 6: 3, 5: 7 and 4: 6. For the world number 71. it was the fifth first-round loss in a row in Melbourne.

The matches of Siegemund and Maria were actually scheduled for Tuesday, but had to be postponed by one day due to rain. For the same reason, the start of the games on Wednesday was postponed by several hours into the evening (local time).
