For weeks there have been discussions about FC Bayern and the fact that Nagelsmann hardly gives young players like Tel and Gravenberch a chance. The coach himself pleaded for patience on Tuesday. “He didn’t play 30 games with the pros in France either. He has to develop first. He’s 17. He plays for Bayern and his job is to consistently perform well. Then he’ll consistently collect more minutes,” explained Julian Nagelsman.
However, it seems that the veterans don’t need to play consistently well to keep getting brought back. Otherwise, the stakes of players like Serge Gnabry or Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting hardly justify.
Tel lacks standing at FC Bayern
However, as a 17-year-old, Mathys Tel simply does not yet have the standing that other experienced and well-paid professionals enjoy. Julian Nagelsmann himself admitted that he finds it difficult to put experienced greats on the bench. “How do you deal with a player who has an extreme standing and importance and has also done a lot for this club?” Nagelsmann asked himself. The 35-year-old’s answer is apparently to always set up or substitute the players. It is also clear that he can expect less headwind from inexperienced and new players.
However, it is problematic not to promote the potential stars of tomorrow. At some point, there will be a situation where young potential newcomers increasingly decide against moving to Bayern. How often will players like Gravenberch, who was fully convinced of his decision after talks with Nagelsmann and Salihamidzic, still be able to “fool”? In Munich you would have to choose a path. Either you sign young players and use them – or you just leave it as it is.
Nagelsmann counters striker debate: “My job to control things”
For example, Julian Nagelsmann drew criticism for his gait after the Dortmund game. Once again he had brought Choupo-Moting instead of Tel. Lothar Matthäus, for example, noted that the young Frenchman would have been the better striker in this situation. Uli Hoeneß also explained that “a classic nine is missing” and thus fueled an already existing center forward debate. A playing and hitting Tel could minimize this, but Julian Nagelsmann leaves that cold.
“In the end we don’t have the classic nine and then it’s my job to steer things in such a way that we compensate well. Regardless of whether the honorary president or anyone else comments on it,” Nagelsmann grumbled.
