Diesel fuel is currently taxed less than gasoline. Should anything change in this, the designated Transport Minister Volker Wissing wants to compensate for it.

The designated Federal Minister of Transport Volker Wissing wants to prevent a possible additional tax burden for diesel drivers.

“The FDP will ensure that higher energy taxes on diesel fuels are offset by lower vehicle taxes,” said the FDP politician of “Bild”. Accordingly, Wissing wants to «ensure that the reform of the energy tax directive does not lead to excessive burdens for taxpayers».

Tax adjustment planned

The background to this is this formulation in the coalition agreement between the SPD, Greens and FDP: “With the implementation of the EU Energy Tax Directive, which provides for the tax adjustment of diesel fuel and petrol, we will review the tax treatment of diesel vehicles in the vehicle tax.”

Diesel fuel is currently taxed at 47.04 cents per liter, petrol at 65.45 cents per liter. But the road tax for diesel is higher. However, the EU Energy Tax Directive has not yet been adopted. The EU Commission has proposed a revision as part of the “Fit for 55” climate package. Among other things, tax exemptions and reductions for certain fuels are to be addressed, as a spokeswoman for the Representation of the European Commission in Germany said.
