Taufkirchen – Dinner for climate protection – District of Munich

The Eschenpassage is – to put it mildly – not exactly the most charming corner of Taufkirchen. And yet the municipal environmental office, the adult education center and the urban development project Soziale Stadt have picked out just that aging shopping center for their climate dinner on Friday, June 24, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The motto of the event is: “Eat and drink together for the climate”. At a picnic, the food and drinks should be shared and interesting conversations held – primarily on the topics of sustainability, environmental protection and plastic avoidance.

“This is a very low-threshold offer,” emphasizes Tilo Klöck from the district management of the Social City of Taufkirchen. “Everyone can come, sit down, eat and chat with them.” Depending on their taste, the participants can bring along folding tables and chairs, along with cutlery, plates, a tablecloth “and maybe even a vase with flowers from the garden or a few candles,” as the invitation states. Food and drinks should be as regional, fair and sustainable as possible – such as vegetables from our own garden or home-baked bread. The idea is to share food and drink with each other, says Tilo Klöck. “For example, you make a salad and it’s not just for two or three people, but for the whole table.”

According to Klöck, paper plates and disposable cutlery are undesirable at the climate dinner; Packaging waste should also be reduced to the bare essentials. After all, the event “stands for consideration for resources and the environment”. Accordingly, the supporting program not only includes a few words of welcome from the mayor and table music from the street piano, but also several short impulse lectures on the subject of climate protection and an exhibition on ecological agriculture, which can be seen in the citizens’ meeting until July 1st.

The climate dinner celebrated its premiere in Taufkirchen three years ago as part of the district’s climate week. At the time, the response was great, with several dozen visitors, remembers Tilo Klöck. This was the reason for the new edition, which is now taking place in front of the citizens’ meeting in the Eschenpassage. Although this location is not the prettiest, admits Klöck. “But that’s a vital center. And I don’t know of any other place in Taufkirchen where things are busier.”
