Accordingly, the federal executive board and the newly elected parliamentary group adopted the resolution unanimously. Germany needs a stable government and must not be leaderless, said Lindner. The country needs a comprehensive modernization of society, economy and state. “We are now on the way to taking responsibility for Germany.”

“Opportunities, but also challenges”

However, Lindner also made it clear that the desired traffic light alliance was not a wishful constellation. “We see opportunities, but we also see challenges.” Before the election, the interlocutors “did not look for each other to express it diplomatically,” said the FDP leader. There are still major differences in content, which will remain so in the future. This required a lot of tolerance and readiness for new thinking from everyone.

“Without a doubt, a traffic light coalition would be an alliance of convenience at the beginning,” said Lindner. “Whether more can come of it is up to everyone involved.” In any case, Germany must become freer, more sustainable, more digital, more modern and more competitive. If this happens, the coalition could be a win for the country.

Lindner also emphasized that the result of the general election meant “no shift to the left”. Nobody can deduce from this that there is a clear shift in the political coordinates to the left. Therefore, a traffic light government must be a government of the middle.

Wissing: Failure “not an option for us”

A negotiating team around Lindner had recommended the start of coalition negotiations after the basic features of a future so-called traffic light coalition had already been negotiated in an exploratory paper last week. The other two parties have already agreed.

FDP General Secretary Volker Wissing said in the morning that coalition negotiations with the SPD and the Greens would be successful. When asked about a possible failure, Wissing said that NDR: “This is not an option for us.” You need a stable federal government. He is confident “that we can do it”.

Dispute over occupations

Wissing described discussions about possible appointments in a traffic light government as premature at the present time. Lindner had previously spoken out against public debates on ministerial posts, but at the same time signaled an interest in the key finance department. But Green politicians had also laid claim to this office. In the upcoming negotiations, the Ministry of Finance is the key department for financing the red-green-yellow projects.
