Five hundred years ago, Martin Luther started translating the New Testament from Greek into German at the Wartburg. On December 18, 1521, the reformer reported this project to two correspondents. Eleven weeks later he was finished with the manuscript, in his hiding place above Eisenach. Luther had fled into this isolation because he had quarreled with Emperor Charles V and the clergy at the Diet in Worms, in the name of the gospel.
