Tablets at Warentest: Hundreds of euros can be saved without apples

Tablets have many advantages in everyday life, goods test has tested them (symbol image)

Just in time for the pre-Christmas season, Stiftung Warentest put 21 tablets to the test. Apple ends up at the forefront – but an Ipad also costs significantly more than other products.

Quickly check something on the Internet, Netflix on the couch or for work and university: Tablets are a versatile everyday companion with their combination of slim, light housing and still large display. And should be under many Christmas trees again this year. Stiftung Warentest has just tested extensively which model is worthwhile. The clear winner is Apple – as long as you don’t look at the price.

Tablets at Warentest: The iPad clearly wins

Because regardless of whether it is about 10-11 inches in size or about 13-inch giant tablets: Apple’s iPad Pro clearly comes in first on both occasions. The two sibling models are the only models in the test that can run in 11th and 12.9 in Get the full number of points in the “Features” section, which also evaluates the high level of performance. The display also got the top rating, the battery and handling were rated positively, but did not reach the top value. “Good” (1.7) is accordingly the test result. When it comes to the price, however, many customers are likely to swallow: The 11-inch model costs at least 800 euros, while the 12.9-inch iPad Pro costs as much as 1050 euros. The version tested by Warentest with LTE costs just under 150 euros extra each.

The competition shows that it can be done more cheaply. That Lenovo Yoga Tab 13 costs only around 700 euros – despite the large displays. It doesn’t quite come close to Apple in terms of performance and screen, but the battery is the best in the test. With an overall rating of “good” (1.8), it is only marginally behind the more expensive test winner.

Cheaper little ones

In the 11 inch category, it’s even cheaper: That Huawei MatePad 11 can be got in special offers in some cases for as little as 300 euros. And it delivers good performance in every respect, even if no top marks are achieved. The only drawback: Instead of classic Android, Huawei relies on its own HarmonyOS operating system. But because not all apps offer this, Warentest rates the versatility as mediocre. In view of this, the overall rating is impressive: With “good” (1.8), the bargain tablet is also just behind the test winner.

In the under 9 inch category, Apple does not mix. The strong one iPad Mini 4 (here in our test) product test came too late in the laboratory, it was not taken into account. Samsung secured first place with the Galaxy Tab Active 3 LTE. It performs well across the board. The fact that it is not top in any area makes up for it by not making any mistakes. The overall grade: “good” (2.0). The price is around 420 euros.
