The German table tennis team has to make do without its best player at the World Cup in South Korea. Timo Boll finally canceled his participation after the first game.

The German Table tennis star Timo Boll will miss the entire team world championship in South Korea. The 42-year-old record European champion suffers from inflammation of the iris in his eye and canceled his participation in the World Cup after another medical examination in Germany.

His teammates had recently won their first World Cup game against the USA 3-0 and had hoped until the end that Boll would be able to travel to Busan at the weekend as planned.

“I’m really disappointed that I’ll miss the World Championships, especially because I felt really good physically and my form was good,” said Boll. “But I have had this type of inflammation of the iris before and the doctors advised me to treat it accordingly and cure it so that the optic nerve is not permanently damaged.”
