SZ series 1972: Owning a moped was more than a means of transportation – culture

It was always more than just a means of transportation, it was the promise of freedom: your own moped in the early 1970s. About a micromobile that is up-to-date again today.

July 1972, the country road to Ampermoching. It’s around 30 degrees. At the side of the road someone pushes a moped with a flat tire in the direction of Hebertshausen. The moped has a chrome backrest, a non-regulatory double saddle, raised handlebars and a yellow painted tank. It’s a bit reminiscent of a motorized bonanza bike, but that’s an association that would have almost mortally offended moped owners 50 years ago. For him, the souped-up Zündapp was the pubescent driver’s license-less answer to Peter Fonda’s Harley.
