SZ podcast: US weapons: Patriots are a signal, there is more to come – politics

The first trip abroad by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy since the Russian attack almost ten months ago is to meet with Joe Biden in Washington. On the agenda: the delivery of the Patriot anti-aircraft systems. Its missiles can fend off aircraft, cruise missiles, drones and other missiles up to a distance of 160 kilometers.

Without US aid, Ukraine would probably only exist geographically, says SZ Eastern Europe correspondent Florian Hassel, “certainly not militarily, as an independent country without Putin.” The US had already delivered billions of dollars and tons of weapons. This help is “clearly decisive” for the resistance.

Unlike other weapon systems, the Patriot system is capable of “shooting down missiles and cruise missiles that the other systems can’t shoot down,” says Hassel. But Patriots can also “only be set up in one place”, probably in or near Kyiv. Ukraine is the second largest country in Europe after Russia and that is why the Patriots cannot offer protection everywhere. It’s more of a “signal”. But: “There is still a lot more to come.”
