SZ Podcast “On the Point” – News from June 22nd, 2022 – Culture

The 15th Documenta has been open to the public since Saturday. This time about 1700 activists are involved in the world-renowned art exhibition. They are intended to illuminate the world from the perspective of the Global South. The exhibition is curated this time by the Indonesian artist collective ruangrupa. But that has now caused an anti-Semitism scandal.

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier says: “Criticism of Israel is allowed, but where criticism of Israel turns into questions about its existence, that’s where the limit has been crossed.” On the night of Saturday, the highly controversial fabric painting “People’s Justice” was unveiled in Kassel. The work was removed on Tuesday. “It’s a racist motif that can’t be shown in Germany,” he says SZ features editor Catrin Lorch. “Clear anti-Semitism,” says Lorch. For them, this is one of the biggest art scandals in recent German history. But you could have known that in advance – so it was probably a “loss of control with intent”.

Further news: Earthquake in Afghanistan, Scholz at G7 meeting, election of Ataman anti-discrimination officer delayed.
