SZ Podcast “On the Point” – News from February 28th, 2022 – Politics

Putin has again threatened to use nuclear weapons. Carlo Masala, security expert at the Bundeswehr University, explains why this scenario is still unlikely.

Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities continued on Monday. More than 500,000 people have already fled Ukraine. The West decides on tough sanctions, and NATO is sending more and more soldiers to the neighboring member states. And amid the already highly explosive situation, Russian President Vladimir Putin is ordering the Russian Army’s deterrence forces to be placed on alert. So he threatens to use nuclear weapons.

Carlo Masala, Professor of International Politics at the Bundeswehr University in Neubiberg near Munich, explains why a nuclear war is still a long way off: “No weapons have been armed. No submarines carrying nuclear weapons have left the port and none are flying strategic bombers around.”
